About City

With slightly over 9 million residents, London is both the capital and largest metropolis of both England and the United Kingdom. It has been a significant community for two millennia and is located on the River Thames in south-east England at the head of an estuary that extends for 50 miles (80 km) down to the North Sea. The City of London, its historic core and financial hub, was established by the Romans as Londinium and still has limits that are similar to those from the Middle Ages. Since the 19th century, Greater London, which is mostly comprised of the counties of Middlesex, Essex, Surrey, Kent, and Hertfordshire, has also been referred to as "London." Greater London is overseen by the Greater London Authority.

London, one of the major global cities, has a significant impact on the fields of the arts, entertainment, fashion, commerce, finance, education, health care, media, science, and technology, as well as tourism, transportation, and communications. With a GDP of €801.66 billion in 2017, it is the largest urban economy in Europe and is a significant global financial hub. London had the most millionaires as of 2021 of any city. It has the highest concentration of higher education institutions in Europe, including the all-encompassing University College London, the London School of Economics for social sciences, and Imperial College London for scientific and applied sciences. The London Underground is the oldest rapid transit system in the world, and London has the busiest city airport system in the entire globe.

Over 300 different languages make up London's various cultures. Greater London was the third-most populated metropolis in Europe as of mid-2018 with a population of about 9 million, making up 13.4% of the population of the United Kingdom and more than 16% of the population of England. In Europe, the Greater London Built-up Area has 9.8 million residents, making it the fourth most populated region after Istanbul, Moscow, and Paris. With over 14 million residents as of 2016, the London metropolitan region ranks third in terms of population in Europe after Istanbul and Moscow, earning London the title of megacity.
